Mic Check 9.5

Mic Check 9.5

Mic Check 9.5 "Real Recognize Real" hosted by Killah Priest.

Rating 4/5

Tha Advocate and Underground cooked up another street gem. Mic Check 9.5 picks up where Volume 9 left off. Killah Priest made a return to bless the project with unlimited music and hosting. This time around Mic Check is strictly digital and a free download for all! Mic Check has alligned itself with, Hip Hop website heavyweight, Ballerstatus.com . With over 2 cds full of music (44 tracks), and a combination of unsigned artists and your favorite rappers, Mic Check 9.5 is not your average collaboration mixtape.

After the K.P. Intro get ready for "Almighty". That joint right there is why Priest has never fell off. Its like something that would have been on "Heavy Mental", but with a new age twist. Joell Ortiz writes a "Letter to Obama" in song format, while LL, Lil Kim, Krs One, and Jim Jones all come together for the "5 Boroughs Is Back". If you are into lyrics or swag then both of those joints will fulfil your appetite. Tha Advocate slaughters Fat Joe's crackhouse instrumental and drops the "Mic Check / Ballerstatus" freestyle as he spits "I'm sick of all the nonsense, yall need to stop it/ I hold yall hostage when I fuckin HAWK,SPIT/ Rappers keep on mocking this repeat pop shit/ I got a secret I'm polished and don't mean to gossip". WHOOOOA and later on Advo lets us know that he "drops jewels like big white pearls/ and got more sweet 16's then rich white girls".

Another straight hip hop joint was "Sic O' Syrus and Sha Stimuli's song "Who". As a matter of fact those two joints were back to back. One underground feature that stood out was the recession inspired, humor filled, song from ST. John titled "All Broken Up". Its a metaphor about being married "to a bitch named broke".

That joint needs rotation asap! Sketch Architec and Shawn Blayze bring some 90's sounding boom bap back to your ears. Blayze lets you know why he's "not your simple type of nigga", while Sketch takes you to the depths of his mind on "Bitter Thoughts". Big Gib repped for the "A State". Yess yall... Arkansas is on the map now. Despite the bad quality recording Agonee Bogard of Camorra Inc delivered "Murda Rap" which outshined most features.

One of my favorite things about Mic Check is the different catagories each time. This months Old School Jewel was none other then Onyx's 1995 smash, "Thangz Changed". Also the "Mic Check Quotable" had Cali's Crooked I and New York's Saigon murking the alphabet. I think Crook had that one! Alot of other west coast artists made some noise from The Game, Snoop, Crooked I, to new up and coming artist, Ya Boy. Make sure you check out Killah Priest's joint "Profits Of Man". Its the very essence of what Priest brings to the table. If thats a sample on what his new album "Behind The Stained Glass" has to offer then I'll be the first in line at Best Buy (yes I still buy compact discs).

Mic Check and Ballerstatus.com provided an outlet for tons of unsigned artists and PSA's. If you are looking for beats or studio time check out the Psa's on the project from Glish Productions to the NYC based Galuminum Foil Productions. They say you are only as strong as your weakest link. The weakest link on Mic Check 9.5 was stronger then most mixtape's out today. Bottom line hit up Ballerstatus.com and download this joint!
