It's time for a powerful position to be taken. It's time for the Obama of mixtapes to bring another heat to the game. Finally, "Mic Check Volume 9 ..The Strong Survive..hosted by Killah Priest" is ringing in 2008 the right way.Killah Priest is a veteran to the game with a WuTang affialiation and being a member of the 4 Horsemen (with RassKass,Kurupt and Canibus) K.P. drops multiple jewels for you hungry hiphop heads!
The boisterous "Intro" enters with a cinematic withdrawl. The hard pounding instrumental, the movie chants, and Killah Priest himself will put you in the zone for the oncoming storm brewing. The intro smoothly blends into the gritty Rakim sounding "How Many".Priest shoots multiple darts with an electrifying flow and shows that his New York State of mind is still in tack.Other heavy produced gritty additions come one after another like Tyson blows.Next up "Jay Z-Pray" then the bone chilling "Scarface-Burn".Its almost as if Jay and Face's songs continue off of each other like a sequal when it comes to the grim story telling performed by both.Big Lou,Papoose and Busta Bus release "The Last Lyricist".
This gem is the trophy on the mantle piece so far. Lou sounds determined with a Big Punisher sounding flow but Papoose easily steals the show with his tangid wordplay and monsterous metaphors.Fat Joe surprisingly leaves Miami and spits out his grills for the hard hitting "300".Everything is in key for "300" from production to Joey Crack's spit.Joe may need to take some pointers and stop making it reign and keep bringing it back to South Bronx he once repped thoroughly as Don Cartegena when Jealous One's Envied.Shawn Blayze and Tha Advocate both made impressive performances back to back on MC9.
With Blayze's "My Turn" and Advo's "Get Low Freestyle" the dynamics were impressive.Blayze has that grimy sounding Mobb Deep feel and Advo has that intense wordplay that we have heard before.Hearing these two emcees joint projects in the future should be interesting.Killah Priest left a crater sized impact with "Gun for Gun" with Nas.Hearing these two veteran emcees flow like the Mississippi was history in the making.Young Buck ventured out and had a new sound. This time he brought "New York City".The song was based on his comparison to his surroundings growing up in contrast to NYC.It was brave of him to do and the track is onpoint overall.Other memorable mentions come from Joell Ortiz,Ghost Face Killah, and Andre 3000 (who had the Mic Check quotable).
Jay Z had Dead Presidents 3 in the mix. As refreshing as it was hearing it ...the length and song structure were poorly put together. The DJ Skee,Tru Life, and Snoop song "Watch Me Fall" had a good point to it but just didn't mesh as well as it could have.
Overall we are rescued once again from this mainstream mess and Mic Check was the life preserver.Hearing Killah Priest once again shows that like wine with time K.P. has developed a cult like following and continues to stay true to his art......just like Mic Check does.Once again Volume 9 shows and proves that in this weak hiphop climate Only The Strong Survive.
