Got MTV? then you must have seen the Fight Klub. I never thought i'd see the day where someone could make Jin stutter, sweat and choke in a battle until I saw Serius Jones. Hailing from dirty Jerz Serius is making some serius noise...... On a Sunday afternoon we talked with my dude and here's what happened.......
Sup Serius .... you been quite entertaining this year ....whats new projects are in the works for you?
I got my street album “King ME” that’s available now and a mixtape entitled “Serius Bizness” that I’m orchestrating with DJ Noodles of Shadyville DJ’s. I’m also working to develop some television & interactive content around the “Life Is Serius” brand.
How did you get into battling?
I first got into battling as a dare from one of my boys. I was always the best at freestyling when we would get twisted and just play around snapping on each other. So I think I wanted to prove to myself that I could really win a battle. The rest is history.
First battle you ever did how did you do?
My first battle I came in second place out of about 10 different emcees. That was pretty good considering it was my first time rapping in anything professional. That put the battery in my back to let me know that I was really nice at this shit.
Ok check this out .....hypothetical question but we got to know ..You in your Fight Klub mentality and Eminem in his 8 Mile prime? toe to toe! who do you think would win in a battle.
Serius Jones… No disrespect to Eminem, I’m sure it would be a real battle but in the end of the day I believe in my talents as an MC.
Out of your Fight Klub battles and smack DVD massacre who was more of a challenge to you? Murda Mook or Jin?
Probably Murda Mook. Only because I was battling the whole Harlem Boys
Choir. About 40 dudes with rehearsed rhymes against me... It was sad and pathetic on their part. I only did that battle so the streets could have something to talk about and keep a presence in the market until my music came out. It worked like a charm too!
Can you tell us some of the artists you have worked with and currently are?
I’m pretty in-house with my records so far. Not because I don’t want to work with anyone but mostly because my circle is so talented that music gets done so quick and easy. I’ve worked with crazy talented artists such as Jux, FatCat, Spot, an R&B artists like Summer Johnson, and Jabar, along with a host of others. REAL music.
How bout any producers you are working with?
I have a great group of producers supporting the initial stages of my project right now. Needlz, that has produced for damn near everybody over the last 2 years, including 50 Cent, Scarface, Young Buck, and Ludacris. Buckwild, one of the only producers to be on damn near every classic album to come from an east coast artist. Surefire Music Group, that produced Slow Down and Who I Be (The Swag), and Neek Rusher that produced and is featured on the song Colors. Both of these producers made a great contribution on King Me. Bang Out, producer of Hands Up & Disco Inferno. Vintage, Flaco Da Great, and I have been working on a few joints for myself.
Is it harder for you to battle or to sit down and work on an actual song?
It all comes rather easy to me. It’s all part of the same talent. If it’s in you then it’s all about being around the right producers and energy to bring it out. Creating music is effortless to me because its fun… I never try to force it.
**here at rapcap we try to ask questions the fans would want to know personally. Some may be a bit astray from the norm, but its definately interesting from the outside in.**
Favorite 5 artists of all time?
Nas, Jay-Z, E-Clipz (1st Ave), TuPac, D’Angelo
Favorite Gangsta flick and Favorite comedy?
Goodfellas, and Meet the Parents
Whats a typical day like for Serius Jones?
Crazy. Everyday I’m dealing with something. I might be in a corporate office one day and in a jail cell the next. I’m still in the streets somewhat so I’m not even gonna elaborate on some of my day to day activities, but put it this way, there’s a reason why I say Life is Serius!
How do you feel about Nas titling his album "hiphop is dead?
That’s an interesting statement. I hope he’s going to flip that somehow because I’m right here breathing. Hip Hop can’t be dead if I’m still here, basically the people and the culture defines the life span of Hip Hop. True, things have changed but that is only natural…Hip Hop still benefits our people in so many ways. It provides a vehicle for our voice in society and a financial opportunity that a lot of individuals in this game have capitalized on to feed their families. Hip Hop won’t die until all the positives of this culture and music have been destroyed. I can’t see that happening anytime soon. The goal is to keep Hip Hop alive by using this culture and music to positively effect the people.
Whats your take on East coast emcee's doing bounce tracks?slowing there vocals down?choppin and screwing there tracks?
It can definitely come across corny and seem like a reach. It seems like artist are staying away from creativity and just following the next mans blueprint. It takes a special emcee to change the times instead of being changed by them. It’s evident that its time for a new blueprint in east coast Hip Hop. Life Is Serius my debut album will take it back to the basics… focusing on the my story as an individual. The whole album will be cinematic so you don’t only hear me, you see and feel me. The same way you did with Ready To Die, Illmatic, The Chronic, and Reasonable Doubt.
**back to the norm
Is hiphop in its prime or decline right now?
I think the golden age of Hip Hop was during the period between 88 and 98. But business wise Hip Hop has never been better than now. It’s like any industry though. As the business flourishes the art and creativity suffers. It’s all BIG business.
Whats your relationship now like with all the people you battled before?
I don’t have a relationship with any of them dudes. I appreciate them being my victims though. The money I won from them helped to sponsor my career!
How does it feel to recieve both UMAS? and yo see yourself in the xxl with Pac on the cover?
For my emcee ego it’s a good feeling but because my mind is on achieving GREATNESS and knowing the work that I have put in I feel like its regular. I can’t look at it as a big deal because we have Grammy’s to win. Only those that are used to losing get extra exited when they win. I am focused on achieving long-term success. I know the road will be long and hard but I will continue the journey until I reach the ultimate destination, which included multiple classic albums and the accolades that come from a successful recording career.
What makes you differ from the next emcee? Whats gonna make your album different then other shit out there nower days?
First of all there aren’t that many “emcees,” most of these dudes are rappers. The average rapper has the average story. “Sold drugs or struggled in the hood and now I rap.” My story is very different and unique. I’ve been to college and jail so my perspective on life is crazy. I’m also a musician and understand music is different from just “rapping.” However, I’m a competitor with a flawless reputation because Serius Jones is the best emcee breathing as far as I’m concerned. Not because I’m drunk off myself but because I put that level of work in and I’m blessed with a talent that’s unparalleled.
We look forward to seeing what you bring to the table in the future especially since "King Me" is a certified street classic now .
So in closing plug anything you feel necessary, let the fans know where and when to get your material.Give any shouts or Fuck you's whatever you feel necessary!
Well all my fans that have supported me from day one I definitely appreciate the love. I’m still fascinated at the fact that I’m able to do what I do and its getting love across the world. It’s all a blessing from God and I pay homage to that which my talent comes from. To all the haters that exist I appreciate that as well because that drives me to work even harder. If you appreciate REAL, heartfelt, original creativity in the form of music, film or whatever…fuck wit Serius Jones! This is history in the making!! Shout out to Zingari Management, Tygereye Entertainment for my publicity, Needlz for always being there when I need him as a friend and crazy producer, all the producers that made contributions on King Me, Allhiphop.com, Fight Klub, and MTV for all the opportunities to shine, friends and family because without your support I really couldn’t enjoy my recent success, and New Jersey for holding the kid down.
